Gangubai Kathiawadi from director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s first look is making waves on social media. Starring Alia Bhatt with Ajay Devgn in the lead role, it set to release this year on September 11. The film, which will be Alia’s first project with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is based on the life of a Mafia queen in real life.
Based on a the ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ by Hussain Zaidi, the film revolves around the life of Gangubai Kothewali, a very powerful woman of the 60s who was very famous as the ‘Madam of Kamathipura’ for her links to the underworld.
The first look of Gangubai Kothewali which sees Alia as Gangubai, is being lovingly showered by certain fans of the actor and work buddies. Deepika Padukone wrote “love” in the comment thread on Alia’s Instagram post, and attached a heart emoji.
Gangubai Kathiawadi was an Indian criminal, don, sex worker, businesswoman; a controversial figure from Kathiawar, India all in all. She operated a sex-racket in the red light district of Hera Mandi. She had been a very influential figure through the 1960s in Mumbai.
